1Q84 - review

I wasn't going to read this book because I decided I was sick of reading Murakami and all his books are the same.  Then my sister's friend loaned it to her and it was just sitting around the house.

So on Sunday I picked up and started reading.

At first I was half loving it and half thinking yeah of course this shit is happening, because it always happens in every one of these books.  Like when you are a watching a magic act and you can see how the magic works but it's still such good magic that you keep watching.

Anyway, my opinion on the book is that it's really heavy.  Do not start reading it unless you are on holidays or have a huge chunk of time because if you carry it around in your handbag you will get a very sore back*.

And you will carry it around and read because it gets so compelling.  By the time I was 100 pages in, I didn't want to do anything but read it.  I resented every other activity in my life because it meant I wasn't reading.

Now I'm finished and I have permanent back damage and a hole in my life where reading this book used to be.

* disclaimer - if you read the Japanese version, it's in 3 volumes so not so heavy but I think they figured us big Westerners can handle it.
