More accommodation woes -- and this time the fault is all mine. I did something very stupid.
On the 25th I'm heading to Vienna for 6 nights. I booked my hotel when I first started planning my trip months and months ago. That was all fine.
Then, last night, sick of this heatwave in Europe (which I mocked a few weeks ago... not so much now), I decided screw it. The room I'd booked had no air conditioning. I went back on booking.com and found a room that was a bit ($200) more expensive for the 6 nights but had room air conditioning. Room air conditioning, not that lousy hotel set air conditioning that is still set too high.
That was all happy times until I went to cancel the first booking.
I never, ever book non-refundable deals. I want the freedom to change my mind even if it costs a bit more. Maybe, if it's a few days out I'll risk it but not month in advance. Because of that, I never even bothered to check the first booking. And, holy shit, it was non-refundable. The second hotel (being only next week and a good deal) is also non-refundable.
Yep, I have two rooms booked at different hotels that I can't cancel. Well, I can cancel them but I still have to pay full price.
I've contacted booking.com to see if there is any leeway on the refund thing and they are talking to the hotel -- it's at the hotel's discretion not theirs. They will get back to me in 32 hours they have said.
Fingers crossed the hotel decides to be nice about it. Even if they let me cancel at 50%, it'll be a huge relief. Also a win for them because it's peak holiday season so they should be able to fill the room.
I will never, ever try to change a room again without checking first. Hopefully I'll be able to afford some nice cakes in Vienna and not be in my room the whole time eating stale bread crusts.
Update: the hotel has agreed to allow me to cancel the room with no penalty. Woohoo!
After all my issues with places on Airbnb, I have to say their internal customer service is brilliant. They have really gone beyond my expectations.
I was worried when I had the second issue that they'd write me off as a trouble maker but all their messages and contact with me has been incredibly helpful, sympathetic and personal. With the second place, they not only compensated me for the unused nights but covered the cost of my hotel room for the first night.
And, it's definitely third time lucky because the place I'm renting in Hungary is perfect. There is even a beagle puppy living next door.
