Monthly Recap: August 2016

I've given up doing weekly updates since my life isn't exciting enough to justify that but figure monthly recaps are good. It makes me remember what I've done anyway.

Destinations Visited:

Not much travelling this month. I moved from Tasmania to Melbourne. Then from Fawkner in Melbourne to Williamstown (on account of the rats!) then to Balaclava. Moving around the city seems to be much more exhausting than moving countries but then getting a fuckton of stuff out of storage before realising your Airbnb is overrun with rats doesn't help.

Favourite Destinations:

Well Melbourne. Although my top spot in Melbourne so far has been Machi restaurant in St Kilda. It's so hard to get Japanese food in this city that isn't some shitty fusion crap overloaded with strong flavours. You know you are in an authentic Japanese place though when the waiter says "glass wine". Ha.

Our five day mini-break in the historic seaport of Williamstown was kind of forced on us, needing to escape the rats and having a gap before anywhere that allowed dogs was available long-term. It was sweet though. We had gorgeous weather and had lots of waterfront dog walks with bonus fish n' chips.

Being back in my old neighbourhood for a while.

Finding out about all the awesome inner city food delivery services. Note: do not use Uber Eats. They took a $15 account verification out of my sister's bank and said it'll be a week before it's sorted.

Being offered a (paid) upgrade for my Jetstar flight to Tokyo next week. Oh yeah, leg room will be awesome.

Melbourne coffee.

Catching up with old friends.

Rats would definitely be a challenge. A huge challenge. I never want to go through that kind of stress again.

August was a shitty month for me in terms of petty rip-offs or incompetencies. Just small amounts of money, $10 or $20 or so. Mostly it was from businesses not giving any fucks more than being outright deceitful but it's annoying. I have to take time out of my day to follow up on things and that bugs the heck out of me. It's damn stupid too because you can bet your butt I'll never use those businesses again.

I took this when I was in Switzerland a few years ago. It was one of those awesome moments when you're glad you have your camera out.

What I Watched This Month:

Stranger Things. Is everyone in the world watching this at the moment? It's a pretty awesome series.

I also watched some free-to-air TV which I rarely do and now I remember why I don't watch it. TV is crap. The only watchable thing on is The Simpsons. Australians are obsessed with food and home ownership/renovations. Boring.

Work and Money:

My income took a serious slide and, because I was focused on more immediate issues (ie. not catching bubonic plague from rats), I've not addressed it. My writing productivity was way down too, for the same reasons. I wrote about 3K words in August. Probably my lowest writing month in about three years.

On the other hand, I got the settlement from selling my investment property (my mum's house) so I'm not exactly broke. I will be when I have to pay the Capital Gains Tax on it though. Australian government, you suck balls.

Coming in September 2016:

Back to Tokyo on the 11th. Normally, I stay in cheaper neighbourhoods but I'm sick of inconvenience so this time I'm staying in Aoyama. Also, I figure rats can't afford to live in Aoyama, right?

I am determined to get my historical novel finished. It keeps getting pushed aside for easier projects but I want that damn thing done. Then I might write a sequel.

Catching up with Tokyo friends.

Okay, the hugest thing in September will be finding out if I hit in the Arashi concert ticket ballot. I won't. Then I'll cry.

Also, my birthday.
